Chances are, you’ve never heard of John Lawlor. And that’s okay, as the Philadelphia-based tenor guitarist has kept a relatively low profile over the years. But, as evidenced on a handful of YouTube clips, Lawlor is arguably one of the greatest tenor guitarists alive today.
When Lawlor plays, you forget you’re only hearing a four string guitar. In fact, his chord melody playing reminds us a bit of the late genius Ted Greene. Yes, he’s that good. During this live streamed interview (which took place on June 2, 2014), Lawlor talked about his background, his uniquely modified gear and his playing technique.
Lawlor is making a rare West Coast appearance at the annual Tenor Guitar Gathering in Astoria, Oregon, taking place June 5-8, 2014.
