Lennon’s Poster: An Amazing Documentary for Anyone Who Loves Music History

November 2012

Peter Dean always admired the Victorian circus poster that supposedly inspired John Lennon to pen “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite.” The only problem was that there were no good copies of this mysterious vintage poster to be found. So Dean does something truly ambitious (with film crew in tow): He hired a wood engraver and a letterpress printer to painstakingly duplicate the poster exactly. It’s just the sort of project we geek out about here at the Freboard Journal and it’s now preserved as a gorgeous high-definition documentary called Lennon’s Poster.

Lord knows how much Dean spent to create his copy of the poster (as a former letterpress printer, I can tell you that hand setting type is not something you can rush), but I’m so glad he did. Watch the video here.
