Catch of the Day: Circle Strings Slope Shouldered Dreadnought

A while back we featured Adam Buchwald of Circle Strings in our Bench Press column. Lo and behold, here’s a sweet slope shouldered Dreadnought, brand new, available for purchase at Music Store Live for $3,099 (and the first guitar Adam built after relocating to Burlington). Like many of Adam’s guitars, this one has a deceptively simple vibe about it – there’s no “bling” to speak of, but there are fine appointments and lovely woods, including bindings and a back strip of curly maple, and a spalted maple end cap that was supplied by the late, great banjo maker Will Fielding. The guitar sports a set of some rather spiffy Honduran rosewood for its back and sides, a nicely-figured, tightly-grained Sitka spruce top, Adirondack spruce braces, a Honduran mahogany neck, and an ebony fingerboard and a Macassar ebony bridge. The nut and saddle are bone.

Of course, it’s not a straight-up slope shouldered Dread, in the traditional sense. There are distinctive elements, starting with that Honduran Rosewood, for example, extending to its 25.4″ scale length and – my favorite touch – a simple, sleeker pickguard than one usually sees on a slope D. The guitar also features a bolt-on neck joint and that wild headstock. Tone-wise, it’s a big guitar, responds well to flat-picking and strumming, as well as finger-picking (check out the video to see and hear the guitar in action).
