Chicago GuitArtist Eric Mecum
Eric Mecum is a Chicago artist. He paints wonderful photo-realistic paintings and builds unique and creative guitars that have the same exacting attention to detail. One would expect this article to veer into a who's who of notable musicians that Eric has built for, but that is a short (but cool) list of one: blues musician Mississippi Gabe Carter. The truth is, Eric still has most of the instruments he’s built. It's a personal artistic journey for him, melding his love for music, art and craftsmanship into one creation. A lot of the early instruments were built in the kitchen of his apartment, often covering every square inch in sawdust. I often got to try the guitars and give feedback on the playability and tone. He got to hear them through a vintage tube amp. It was always fun. The guitars are spectacular in person. Not surprisingly; all have wonderful finishes. There is much more to see at Eric's web site: http://www.ericmecum.com.
